This weekend marks the 150th anniversary of Confederate General “Stonewall” Jackson’s campaign in the mountains of Western Virginia in 1862. The Bath-Romney Campaign Historical and Preservation Association will host living history events at Berkeley Springs State Park to commemorate the lives that were lost during the campaign. The commemorative events will take place on January 7, 2012, from 9am-9pm and on January 8, 2012, from 11am-4pm.
Living history events at Berkeley Springs State Park include candlelight tours, firing demonstrations, fife and drum presentations, living history encampments, music by Civil War comrades, and period dance instruction. Civil War events at Berkeley Spring State Park will also feature a first person presentation called “Meet Stonewall Jackson” by Doug Riley of the WV Humanities Council. Your kids will love the special children’s program called “Enlist now!” that teaches them to march and drill like Civil War soldiers. Other memorable events in the 150th anniversary event include “An army marches on its stomach,” which highlights how soldiers cooked their own meals over open fires, and a Victorian/Civil War Concert at The Country Inn. Most events will take place at Berkeley Springs State Park, but some will take place at The Country Inn, which is located at 110 S. Washington Street.
You do not want to miss this 150th anniversary celebration in nearby Berkeley Springs! Be sure to tell us at Holiday Inn Martinsburg, WV, if you learn anything new about Civil War history.
